Class 4/8

I liked what Mike said about how all of the people we consider saints were good people who had to deal with horrible things. I mean this book presents pretty much everything necessary to meet those qualifications.

I'm also quite interested to see how much things change once we read the next book in the series.

To me the most interesting part of the discussion was the lists we made about who we would send on this mission. I think this is the most fascinating part.

Within each of the groups certain positions all seemed to be pretty much unanimous. People like a doctor, biologist, pilot, and survivalist were agreed on within the groups and also at the larger class level. People had slightly different ideas about the specifics of these roles but agreed that the roles were necessary. However, in order to fill the other half, it became quite difficult to come to a consensus on what the other positions should be filled with.

Of course the most disturbing news of the whole day, Brad Pitt is going to play a Jesuit Space Missionary. AHHH!!!!!!!!

But he'll be a hot Jesuit Space Missionary...

I found it even more interesting that it took us ten or fifteen minutes to challenge the idea of sending people first. Admittedly, it's because that's what they do in the book, but as soon as we had cleavages in who we thought should go (getting outside of the pilot, etc.), it occurred to me that we were being swept up by the "coolness" of sending people to another planet. Maybe not the wonder of belief, necessarily, but certainly the wonder of being sci-fi geeks sending a mission to another planet.

Moral of the story? We need to be most skeptical of the things we have a vested interest in, so as to make sure our own opinions do not cloud our judgment.

I have to agree with you, Tim. Brad Pitt is a horrible choice. Not only does he not fit Emilio as a character, his personal life doesn't quite equal that of a priest not that it has to but it makes it more unbelievable, but his characters thus far aren't exactly Emilio either. How can you equate the guy from Fight Club or Ocean's Eleven to Emilio? And he's blond! Emilio is supposed to look Spanish. Spanish Brad Pitt is not.

Well, I guess if Casper Van Dien can play Juan Rico from Argentina, anything can happen in a movie with the same title as a Sci-Fi book.
